CCR5

The CC chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) is a receptor for many chemokine including CCL4, CCL5, CCL8, CCL3, CCL2, CCL14, CCL11 and CCL16. CCR5 is also the most important co-receptor for HIV transmission and is the only one demonstrated to play an essential role in HIV/AIDS pathogenesis. The CCR5 receptor antagonist maraviroc has beeen approved as HIV entry blocker for all known CCR5-tropic HIV-1 strains. CCR5 desensitization, β-arrestin recruitment and internalization are regulated by phosphorylation of carboxyl-terminal serine336/serine337 (pS336/pS337-CCR5), threonine340 (pT340-CCR5) and serine342 (pS342-CCR5) residues. This nomenclature refers to the human CCR5. This phosphorylation motif is highly conserved across species and is also present in mice and rats.
